- 1–2 tbsp milk or cream (if needed for texture)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line two 8-inch round cake pans with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, black cocoa, sugar, baking soda, and salt.
- In a separate bowl, whisk buttermilk, oil, eggs, vinegar, and vanilla. Add black food coloring if desired.
- Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry mixture. Mix on low speed just until smooth and combined — don’t overmix.
- Divide the batter evenly into the pans. Bake for 30–35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Let the cakes rest in their pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before frosting.
- Beat cream cheese and butter until smooth. Gradually add powdered sugar and vanilla. Mix until light and creamy.
- Spread frosting between the layers and over the entire cake. Smooth with a spatula for a clean finish or swirl for texture.
Notes
Use black cocoa powder for the signature deep color and rich flavor.
For natural coloring, omit food dye and add 1 tsp espresso powder instead.
Ensure all ingredients are at room temperature for a smooth, even batter.
