Ingredients
- 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
- 4 cups sliced apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
- ½ cup apple butter
- ¼ cup brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 tablespoon flour
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
Instructions
- Prepare the crust: Mix flour, salt, and sugar. Cut in butter until crumbly, then add ice water until dough forms. Chill for 1 hour.
- Make the filling: Toss sliced apples with apple butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, flour, and lemon juice.
- Assemble: Roll out crust, place in pie dish, and fill with apple mixture. Cover with top crust or lattice.
- Bake: Brush with egg wash and bake at 375°F (190°C) for 45–55 minutes, until golden and bubbly.
- Cool and serve: Let the pie rest for 2 hours before slicing. Serve with whipped cream or ice cream.
Notes
You can use store-bought crust to save time.
For added crunch, sprinkle chopped walnuts or pecans over the filling before baking.
To make it vegan, use coconut oil instead of butter and almond milk for the egg wash.
